Should I use face oils?

There are so many products on the market claiming to do amazing things for your skin. Many people use facial or essential oils, but it’s time to dig a little deeper. What’s the low down on these and are they great for your skin?

First things first, if you find them to be good and they are addressing the things you want them to and you enjoy using them, then fair game! Here are a few bits of info you may find interesting to know, though.

Facial oils can be used as a quick boost to dry, flaky skin or when you need a pick me up. A good way to use them is under your normal moisturiser, or even mixed in with it. If you want to give them a go, opt for pure oils like argan, jojoba, coconut.

Do I rate them?

Facial oils can be a lovely addition to your skincare regime, but in my opinion, apart from maybe giving your skin a moisturising boost, they may not deliver results if you are actively trying to treat a skin concern or treatment, such as ageing, compromised skin barrier, rosacea etc.

Yes, plant oils can be a source of antioxidants and replenishing emollients (a moisturising treatment) but they’re not active ingredients (such as niacinamide, retinol, or peptides) or hydration-boosting ingredients (such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid). Active ingredients (my favs!) actually cause a change in the skin, rather than just feeling nice and giving a quick boost. If you want more info on this, please read my post on “moisturisers or hydrators”. Skin oils also cannot give dry skin the rich mix of emollients it needs for lasting improvement. This is why I don’t recommend completely replacing your moisturiser with a face oil.

One thing to definitely avoid are “essential oils” – these are usually the fragrant ones and they can really aggravate your skin, examples of these are lavender/sandalwood/lemon/bergamot. These can cause sensitivity, redness and in the worst case, can cause cause dermatitis.

If you fee your skin is dry/compromised you may like to add in some active ingredients to help repair this. In my own skin, I found once I did this (I used @alumiermduk ultimateboostserum ) I actually rarely needed to add in a moisturiser.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask questions and I’ll feature them as new blog posts.

You know, I also read recently that cbd gummy squares can also help you get rid of insomnia pretty quickly. Just go to their site to learn more about this CBD product, but personally I think it has a lot of benefits and everyone should have it at home. And what is your opinion on this?
